Chairman's Address - 2015
2015 was a very positive year for Capital Angels, as well as for the wider Canberra Innovation community.
The 2015 edition of the Capital Angels Raising Money Masterclass opened the year and was a very successful event, attracting a large number of attendees and generating very positive feedback. Our thanks go to the presenters, who volunteered their time to share their knowledge and experience with the audience.
This year, Capital Angels celebrated its Tenth Anniversary with a function held at the Arboretum. It was another great event, allowing us to share our celebration with many guests, but also an opportunity to reflect on the foundations of Capital Angels and on the challenges and opportunities ahead.
Investment presentations were held in May (at the Boat House), and in August (at the CBR Innovation Network), with the following companies presenting to investors:
- Baldwin Distillery Company
- Solar Bare
I would like to thank the presenting companies. It is time-consuming to prepare a pitch and it is positive to see that these companies found it worthwhile to present at Capital Angels. Many of these companies are currently negotiating an angel investment round.
I would like to thank our sponsors, without whom it would have not been possible for Capital Angels to conduct its events. Our sponsors for the year were:
- 2015 Raising Money Masterclass: Dixon Advisory and CBR Innovation Network
- May event: RSM Bird Cameron
- August event: GRIFFIN Accelerator
- Tenth Anniversary Event: the ACT Government Economic Development Directorate, ANU Connect Ventures and Australian Capital Ventures Limited.
Our members and directors continued to actively support Capital Angels this year. Their ongoing enthusiastic involvement is essential for Capital Angels and for the wider innovation community. A big thank you to you all.
It was pleasing to see the contribution of the past Chairs of Capital Angels being formally recognised at the Tenth Anniversary event. David Malloch’s vision is still alive today and his hard work in the first few years of Capital Angels continues to bear fruits. Uwe Boettcher and Nick McNaughton have made, and continue to make, a very significant contribution to the success of Capital Angels.
A special thank you to Anne-Marie Perret, Deputy Chair of Capital Angels, for her enthusiastic and always positive involvement in all activities.
Finally, I would like to thank Lighthouse Business Innovation Centre. The ongoing excellent support by Anna Pino, Rachel Christou and the rest of the team allows Capital Angels to function smoothly and to hold very successful events.
In the past year, Capital Angels continued to add new members, and to expand its networks in order to attract more investors to angel deals. Capital Angels continues to be a respected member of the Canberra innovation community while firmly holding on to its identity as an investor network.
I look forward to another successful year for Capital Angels.
Chairman, Capital Angels
